Vision Statement: My unsolicited and ever-evolving opinion on theatre

I think everyone’s set of circumstances are too variable to describe the human experience as universal. I don't believe that human emotions can be understood universally, and I definitely don’t believe we can distill  everyone's lives into a singular “human truth.”

These limitations aside, there must be a reason storytelling has persisted through time. Right? Perhaps humans are social creatures and our need for community has proven key to our survival. Theatre is a force that sparks empathy and dialogue within a community and is a tool to understand ourselves and the people around us. If we can tell each other’s stories with intention and care, maybe one day, everyone will be lucky enough to see a story on stage that resonates with them. This provides a gateway to empathizing with other's stories and what they have to offer.

And, just maybe, changing luck to intention is the best we can do.

In order to do this, we have to keep telling stories- all stories, from all walks of life. At this moment in time, we are at a tipping point. We are at the precipice between a select few voices and a world more receptive to the stories and voices that have historically been oppressed and ignored. This is the work of which I want to be a part. I want to work on shows honestly reflecting what the world looks like today, not just those faces and voices of those holding power. I want messy stories of people’s experiences, the stories about people’s hopes and love, and stories that subvert power structure to make us question what we assume to be true.

I hope my artistry and the work I do in lighting supports the larger artistic vision of this type of work. As part of a creative team, I first take the time to listen and learn from the story being told and the artists around me. From there I begin to ask questions. Questions that push other people's thinking and pull at the threads beginning to form, in an effort to create a clear picture for the audience. It is from this dialogue I find my place within a process and how to best support the common storytelling goal. I use lighting to help amplify emotions and sculpt the worlds we put on stage with the ultimate goal of revealing something new to the audience. I want the work I do to not only to continue to shape a single production but also reshape the structures of theatre to be more inclusive, equitable, and collaborative. I am invested in not just putting new stories on stage but also changing how audiences consume theatre and the institutions that have served as gatekeepers in the past. I look forward to continuing to grow a community of artists with a passion for theatre and share the values of creating work that is by, and for all people.
